What is acne?
Acne is a widespread skin condition that occurs most commonly in teenagers but often extends into adulthood. The cause of acne is multi-factorial and is felt to result from the interplay of clogged pores, increased oil production, inflammation and bacteria.
What causes acne?
Genetic predisposition, hormonal factors, dairy and sugary foods, mechanical irritation and exposure to clogging oils play a role in flaring acne.
Does diet matter?
The relationship between diet and acne remains controversial. It has been suggested that dairy products and high glycemic diets may exacerbate acne in predisposed individuals. A trial of a milk free, low glycemic diet may benefit some individuals with persistent acne.
How often should I cleanse my face?
Acne is not caused by dirt and cannot be washed away. Using abrasive cleansers and washing too frequently can actually make acne worse. It is recommended that you remove your makeup completely before going to bed and cleanse twice daily with a cleanser containing pore exfoliating ingredients such as salicylic acid and lipohydroxy acid. Avoid abrasive cleansers and washcloths and gently pat rather than rub your skin dry after cleansing.
Are there any cosmetics that patients with acne should avoid?
Patients with acne should minimize the use of lip gloss and avoid creme eye shadows and blushes, metallic eye shadows, body and face glitter and oil based or creamy foundations.

Over the counter acne cleansers containing salicylic and/or lipohydroxy acid or benzoyl peroxide and topical lotions and cremes containing salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, retinol, sulfur or tea tree oil can be helpful in early acne.
