What is Melasma?
Melasma is a pigmentation disorder of the skin that causes hyperpigmented dark spots on the face. Sun exposure, pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy and genetic predisposition are felt to play a role in causing this disturbing skin condition. An increase in estrogen and progesterone receptors in the areas of the skin affected by melasma are felt to predispose to the development and recurrence of melasma.
The pigmentation resulting from melasma appears in one of three patterns. The central facial pattern involving the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose and chin, the malar pattern involving the cheeks and nose and the mandibular pattern involving the jaw area. Rarely melasma can also involve the forearms.
