Removing unwanted body hair can be a tedious and time consuming process for men and women. Patients who have excessive hair growth, ingrown hairs or razor bumps or those who are just tired of temporary methods of removing hair from the face, back, underarms, arms, legs, bikini line or other body areas may benefit from laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is a medical procedure in which a high intensity laser beam is used to remove unwanted hair by selectively heating and damaging the hair follicle. Utilizing a variety of lasers of different wavelengths we can remove brown or black hair from individuals of all skin types, including darker pigmented and tanned skin.
Since hair cycles as it grows, a series of treatments is necessary to achieve maximum hair reduction. While most patients experience prolonged or permanent hair reduction following a series of laser treatments, rarely laser treatment is ineffective or causes a paradoxical increase in hair growth.
Our experienced physicians and physician assistant utilize the GentleLASE and GentleYAG lasers to remove brown and black hair from individuals of all skin types.

The GentleLASE laser can be used to remove unwanted brown or black hair from patients with light to medium toned skin. The GentleYAG laser can remove hair from patients of all skin types including those with darker complexions or tanned skin.
The Procedure
The GentleLASE and GentleYAG laser systems deliver a high energy beam of laser light that selectively targets and damages the hair follicle. Both lasers utilize a patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) to maximize patient safety and comfort. Patients may experience mild to moderate discomfort during the procedure, similar to the sensation of being snapped with a rubber band. To minimize discomfort a topical anesthetic cream can be applied prior to treatment. Treatment sessions generally last from fifteen minutes to an hour depending the size and number of areas being treated. Multiple treatment sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart are recommended to maximize hair reduction.

After treatment it is common to experience temporary redness, swelling or sensitivity in the treated area. A cool compress or topical anti-inflammatory medication is often prescribed to alleviate these symptoms. It is important to avoid sun exposure before treatment and during the healing process.
Risks
Side effects following laser hair removal are uncommon but possible. To minimize risks, it is important to choose a physician who is experienced in the use of lasers for hair removal and to follow pre and post-operative instructions carefully. Potential risks of laser hair removal include an increase in hair growth, allergy to topical anesthetic, skin burn, skin lightening or darkening, acne flare, skin infection, damage to eyes or scarring. Your physician will review risks and alternative treatments with you during your initial consultation.
